A Letter To My Creative Self

May is Mental Health Awareness Month – a perfect reminder to pause, reflect, and nurture ourselves.

As part of this month’s Ko-fi challenge, I took a moment to write a letter to my creative self – to celebrate growth, honour the journey, and offer a little encouragement for the road ahead.

In the letter, I shared the joy of rewilding our space, the small victories, and the beauty in embracing the mess along the way. It is a love letter to the work, to the process, and to the wild things we are nurturing, one step at a time.

Dear Creative Me,

I want to take a moment to celebrate something truly special – this little patch of land we are nurturing together. Looking back, it is hard to believe how far we have come. Less than a year ago, our world felt torn apart, and this space mirrored the upheaval – a patchwork of challenges and uncertainty. The yard was a mess, and let’s be honest, so were we.

But now, things are beginning to shift. The yard is slowly coming together, and while you are still figuring things out (hello, unemployment), you have been patching yourself up too – one muddy boot, bird sighting, and planting one native seedling at a time. Now, the backyard is on the path to becoming a vibrant, living space filled with pollinator-friendly blooms, wildlife, and all the beauty that comes with working in harmony with nature.

The process of rewilding – of finding balance between your goals and the patience required – has not just transformed the space; it has transformed you. The wildlife pond, from the first hopeful sketches to the decision to tear it out and start over, is a symbol of your resilience. You did not make that choice lightly – it came after weeks of trying to troubleshoot water loss, fearing the liner was torn, only to discover the problem was not a hole at all. Still you started again. Every time you do, every bird that lands, and every new bloom is a victory – proof that what you are creating is meaningful and will endure.

The native plants we are growing, the wildlife habitats we are carefully creating, and the act of rewilding this space are not just about the yard; they are a reflection of something much bigger. Each step in this journey serves as a reminder that you, too, are rewilding. Just as the land needs time to heal and bloom, so do you. By taking the time to honour your own pace, especially when the world feels uncertain or challenging, you are allowing both nature and yourself to unfold slowly and steadily, at a rhythm that feels true to you.

This work is not just about bringing new life to our yard; it is part of a much-needed movement of reconnecting with nature. It is a gentle but powerful act – contributing, steadily and with care, to the health and balance of the land. And by sharing this journey – through the blog, and social media – you are inspiring others to reimagine their own spaces, to support local wildlife, foster plant life, and embrace their own process of rewilding.

What you are building here goes beyond your fence line – it is part of a growing movement to reconnect with the natural world. The fact that others are connecting with this message, and feeling inspired to take their own steps is proof of the power of what you are creating. You are offering a reminder: there is strength in patience, and beauty in progress that moves at its own pace.

I know that there is still so much to do, and it feels like the journey is only the beginning, but this moment is worth celebrating. It is a reflection of your growth, your resilience, and your love for this place. You have taken a dream and made it real, and that is something to be proud of.

When things feel tough, when the projects seem endless (as they do right now), or the progress feels slow – remember this: You are doing important work, and it is more than okay to rest. The beauty you are cultivating does not happen overnight, just like the steady growth of a tree or the slow unfurling of a fern. The patience you have learned through it all is just as valuable as the results.

Take a breath, look around, and remember: every small step is part of something much bigger. Trust the process, trust yourself, and know that this path will continue to unfold in ways you cannot yet imagine.

And do not forget – your creativity may not look like everyone else’s, and that is more than okay. It lives in the dirt under your nails, the thoughtful planning of rewilded spaces, and the joy of spotting a new bird at the pond. It moves at its own pace, grounded in season and intention. You do not need to match anyone else’s rhythm. What you are creating is meaningful, and it matters.

So here is to the progress we have made, to the lessons learned, and the joy that comes from watching your dreams take root. The future is bright, and I cannot wait to see what is next. Thank you for staying committed and allowing yourself to enjoy the process along the way.

With muddy boots, a hopeful heart,
and roots growing deeper every day,

– Your Wild, Wondering Self
