My Favourite Thrift Finds of 2023

As we approach the end of the year, it is the perfect moment to look back and appreciate the remarkable thrifted treasures that found their way into my home. Each of these pieces has a story to tell, and collectively, they weave a tapestry of an unforgettable year, brimming with treasure huts and delightful surprises. While, I love each piece I thrift (otherwise, I wouldn’t buy it), come along with me as I recount my favourite thrifted finds from the past year.

Brass Canada Geese
I had stumbled upon the a local Antique Mall account on Instagram and noticed a post featuring their “Animals of the World” show. In the post, I spotted a stunning brass figurine depicting two geese in flight. I knew I had to have it. (Obviously!) With a quick online search to gauge its approximate value, I set a budget for myself and wasted no time heading to the antique mall the very next day. Since it was my first time there, I wasn’t entirely sure where the display was located. However, as soon as I walked through the entrance, my eyes locked onto the table, and there it was – the brass geese, still waiting for me at a very reasonable price. I wasted no time adding it to my basket. While researching online, I also stumbled upon a single goose figurine, and naturally, I couldn’t resist picking that one up as well.

Wooden Sewing Box
I came across an Instagram account and through watching some of their videos noticed a charming vintage wooden sewing box for sale. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to their shop until their closing sale but to my pleasant surprise, the sewing box was still there, and it was half price! I am looking forward to cleaning it up and giving it some TLC before filling it with my sewing supplies. It’s a significant upgrade from using a random jar.

Side Table
A side table might not sound like the most thrilling find, but I love this piece! We have been without a coffee table ever since our first one met its end shortly after we moved into the apartment we lived in from 2014-2020. So, we used a “leather” bench that we already had to make do. But when we moved into the condo that we were previously at, there was no room for a permanent coffee table. So whenever we needed a flat and sturdy surface, we’d use a chair, or even drag the kitchen table into the living room temporarily. Not only is this side table charming, but it has become a versatile addition to our living room.

Brass Bird Soap Dish
Brass and a bird – do I need to say more?! I grabbed this beauty literally seconds after it appeared in an online thrift drop. It now holds my bar of soap in the kitchen, adding a touch of elegance to the daily routine.

Copper Cups
I am quite fond of the warm, inviting glow that copper brings. Although I am not a fan of drinking from metal cups, I couldn’t resist picking these up. They are perfect for propagating plants, displaying small flower bouquets, or to corral pens in style.

The One That Got Away
As much as I love recounting my finds, there is also a tale of the one that got away. While perusing the day’s thrift drop stories, a magnificent landscape oil painting caught my eye, and the price was an absolute steal. Half-asleep, I rushed to my computer to make the purchase. However, in the few minutes it took me, it had already found a new owner. The thrill of the hunt often comes with moments of disappointment, and the story of this elusive masterpiece serves as a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of thrifting.

Thrifting is more than just a way to save money and promote sustainability. It is about the thrill of the hunt and the joy of unearthing unique treasures with rich histories. As the year draws to a close, I eagerly anticipate new thrift store adventures in 2024, filled with exciting discoveries waiting to be made.

What were your most cherished thrifted finds this year, and do you have any stories of the ones that got away? Share your experiences in the comments below, and let’s celebrate the art of thrifting together!

Thanks for reading! Until next time,
Tracey
