Life Update, We Bought A House!

In case you missed it in my last post, I briefly alluded to the new chapter unfolding in my life, “the exhilarating yet nerve-wracking journey of becoming a homeowner”.

Yes, you read that correctly! JOSH AND I HAVE BOUGHT A HOUSE AND WE ARE SO STOKED!

Very exhausted and very excited!

Our original plan was to purchase a home mid-2023. However, earlier this year, I encountered some challenging health issues that left me physically unable to actively pursue this dream for a majority of the year. While unable to do much, I casually browsed the Realtor website exploring the majority of every available property listing available in Edmonton within our budget, and meticulously determined our prerequisites and preferences.

After a brief hiatus from my very casual house-hunting, I stumbled upon a remarkably well-preserved century-old house that checked all of our boxes. I promptly reached out to my mortgage advisor to assess our pre-approval amount, received the green light the following day, and wasted no time contacting a real estate agent.

Unfortunately, mere moments after I messaged our realtor, the listing for the house that had caught my eye was removed. On the bright side, another property, albeit more expensive than the century-old gem, piqued my interest. I scouted a few other options that cost less, but they all lacked that certain je ne sais quoi.

We dedicated part of an afternoon touring four homes, with each one surpassing the last (although, anything would have been better than the first one we saw!) As we pulled up to the last house (the one I mentioned above that piqued my interest) I told Josh “Please don’t let me fall in love with this house” even though, deep down, I already had. The moment we set foot inside, it felt like a place we could genuinely call home. I could envision our lives unfolding within these walls. With hearts brimming with enthusiasm after the tour, we returned to our Jeep, and I couldn’t contain my excitement – I squealed “I LOVE IT!” and had a bit of a “OMG! We found THE ONE!” freak out. (Josh shared my enthusiasm). I am curious if the seller noticed our excitement on her doorbell camera…

We placed an offer the next day (because we didn’t want to seem TOO eager to make an offer on the spot), and the rest as they say is history!

Our new home is a cozy bungalow built in 1954, nestled in a serene and peaceful neighbourhood in Edmonton. The home is bathed in an abundance of natural light, has two bedrooms, one office, two bathrooms (one recently renovated, and oh so gorgeous!), a living room, a dining nook, decent kitchen, cozy family room with a gas fireplace, and a double detached garage. The backyard is an idyllic sanctuary, complete with a hot tub, and beautifully landscaped surroundings, promising relaxation and enjoyment in our own piece of paradise surrounded by plenty of plant life, birds and small wildlife.

I absolutely cannot wait to make this our home!

I haven’t taken many photos yet, but here are some from the last two weeks!

French to English translation of “je ne sais quoi“: ‘I don’t know what‘: a pleasing quality that cannot be exactly named or described.
