Moving to a home with a backyard where I could attract, observe, and photograph birds has been a long-held dream of mine. Having a small slice of nature right outside my doorstep was a top priority in my search for a home. During the home inspection day at our soon-to-be residence, the backyard was alive with birds! We spotted American Robins, Black-billed Magpies, Blue Jays, Chickadees, and Dark-Eyed Juncos. I was thrilled at the prospect of enjoying fantastic backyard birding!
Once we moved in, the birds continued to captivate us. While our backyard naturally provided food sources for the birds, we also set up a bird feeder the weekend we moved in. Some of the photos below were taken through the window (not ideal), others were captured using the house as a blind while I extended my camera out the window, and some were taken directly from the backyard.
Although I haven’t managed to capture outstanding photos of every bird that has graced our backyard since we moved in mid-November, here is a list of the ones that we’ve been fortunate enough to spot:
- Black-Capped Chickadee
- Blue Jay
- Downy Woodpecker
- House Finch
- House Sparrow
- Black-billed Magpie
- Merlin
- Pileated Woodpecker
- Red-Breasted Nuthatch – lifer
- White-Breasted Nuthatch – lifer
I’m stoked to discover what birds will visit our backyard in 2024!
