Into the Wild – Weekly Musings on our Yard’s Transformation | September 8th-14th

With the rainy and wet weather, we haven’t been able to do much yardwork or gardening this week. Instead, I’ve been concentrating on planning and researching winter sowing, pond details, and what to plant in our fence-line garden.

Flora:

  • One of the sunflowers that we planted mid-June has bloomed! It is so pretty!

Fauna:

  • I watched some Red-breasted Nuthatches pecking at pinecones – it was fascinating to observe.

Miscellaneous:

  • Visited two greenhouses that are having a sale on trees, hoping to find some for our yard. Unfortunately we came home empty-handed from both trips. One greenhouse did have a tree we wanted, but it was way too big.
  • Earlier this week I was daydreaming about the possibility of creating a large raised flower bed for the wide sidewalk along our fence. After having the boards up for a few days and considering what to put in the space, I have decided that I will be building a the planter, and this time will be staining the boards. I bought the wood from Windsor Plywood, and the water-based stain from Lee Valley. I initially wanted to put boards the whole way down so the existing space with the soil looked like it was part of this space, but decided against it to save some costs. However, I do have an idea on how to make a transition in the middle that might help break up the space a bit more softly.
  • We’re getting close to digging out our pond. I have been testing how cloudy the water becomes with the sand we have and finding that rinsing it beforehand makes a difference. I also did a rough sketch of the design, including the plants, and found suppliers from the main items we need to order.
  • Decided that I will be winter sowing a lot of Alberta native plants over the winter. Planning out which ones to order, and where I will be planting them.

Thanks for reading! Until next time,
Tracey
