Into the Wild – Weekly Musings on our Yard’s Transformation | September 1st-7th

Yardwork:

  • Cleaned and laid down the wood tiles for the hammock platform, instantly transforming the space by hiding the unsightly cement slabs.
  • Finished the side of the house next to the sidewalk, added rocks for edging, and placed pots of marigolds to bring some life to the space for the time being. The rock edging definitely finishes off the space and it looks better than I anticipated. Next, I plan to add Western White Clematis to the planters to climb up the existing trellises. Its dense foliage will provide excellent cover for birds and attract insects, enhancing the greenery and biodiversity in our yard.
  • I converted the front flower garden under the pine tree into a rockery. The original garden wasn’t thriving (mostly my fault for neglect) and I needed to clear out the rocks from the existing raised flower beds that were temporarily along the fence in our backyard. I plan to winter sow some Alberta native plants to add to this space come Spring.
  • I managed to use most of the rocks from alongside the fence for the rockery out front, and stored the remaining in our North side yard for future projects. I cleared out all the mulch, removed the landscape fabric, and any debris. I then filled the area with soil we are still working on removing from the raised flower bed, preparing it for planting. It’s a mystery how the cedar tree has survived in that space – there was so much junk cover the ground underneath it (shingles, tiles, cement slabs, and landscape fabric).
  • Seeded clover up towards our fence, filled in some empty spots that the house sparrows ate, and our dog tore up.
  • Levelled the stepping stones leading from the patio to the backyard
  • Weeded the front yard and flower beds, and applied more salt water around the firepit to tackle the grass and weeds growing through the rocks. It looks like it is starting to work.

Gardening:

  • We harvested a fantastic haul of vegetables. Beans, cucumber, tomatoes, peas, cucamelons and carrots. We also picked some corn, though it might have been a bit early.

Fauna:

  • Saw a flock of Sandhill Cranes flying south.
  • Spotted a Flower Crab spider – I didn’t realize how small they are. Good thing I have a macro lens for my iPhone.

Miscellaneous:

  • Made some Pumpkin Cheesecake muffins
  • The apples and acorns are dropping – It’s dangerous out there.

Thanks for reading! Until next time,
Tracey
