10 Things I’m Stoked For In Our New Home

Sixteen years ago Josh and I made the move to Edmonton. Since then, we have experienced living in three different neighbourhoods, and two different apartments, a duplex, and a condo. As we make the transition to a new home, we are excited about the numerous advantages homeownership offers. In the following list, I share ten things (in no particular order) that I am absolutely stoked for in our new home.

Cozy living room with gas fireplace and mantel with brass geese and candles, and green bottle brush trees
One of our living rooms. It is so cozy in here!

Spacious Layout
Our new home welcomes us with a proper entrance, generously sized living rooms (Yeah, there are two of them – guess I need to go furniture shopping soon), a kitchen that is a bit larger than our previous one (I am so excited for more counter space!), a bathroom with a regular sized bathtub and counter space, a basement for all sorts of activities, and my own home office – providing us with a more spacious and comfortable living environment.  While the dining room is still in the same area as the kitchen, I am so happy not to have the entrance, kitchen, dining and living room all in one tiny space.

Outdoor Oasis
I am eagerly looking forward to creating a beautiful landscaped yard. I have a myriad of exciting ideas on how to enhance our property, and the prospect of enjoying an outdoor space at any given moment is truly wonderful and great for soaking up nature whenever I can, and having a COVID-safe space to hang out with friends and family will be awesome. (Backyard birding is also an added bonus, and something I’ve never really been able to do from any of my previous homes in the city. I had a balcony at my last place, but we were forbidden to attract any birds.)

Personalized Space
I am stoked to say good riddance to the endless sea of the beige landlord special once and for all. Our new home, while mostly move-in ready (primarily white walls), offers us the freedom to paint our walls any colour that we desire, allowing us to express our individuality and make the space truly ours.

DIY Dreams
With a lifetime of pent-up DIY projects, I am stoked to have the space and freedom to bring our creative ideas to life (at least until I realize how much projects can cost 😅) I look forward to challenging myself with projects.

Dedicated Workspace
Working from home since the start of 2018 has meant sharing the second bedroom or a corner of the living room for my workspace. I can’t wait to have a space truly my own. (Although I do really want to use the living room with the fireplace for my office…)

New Luxuries
Our new home offers amenities that I’ve never had before (or since moving from home). Including a garage, fireplace (albeit a gas fireplace, it is still cozy and has a mantel which I’ve always wanted), a central vac sweep inlet in the kitchen, a hot tub, the convenience of food and mail deliveries right to my doorstep, and a yard.

Ample Storage
Unlike our previous cramped quarters, our new home boasts an abundance of storage space, eliminating the need to tuck away belongings under the bed, in cramped closets, or in hidden nooks and crannies. THANK GOODNESS!

Animal De Compagnie
We both have incredibly missed having pets in our lives, and are looking forward to hopefully adopting some furry family members in the near future.

Solitude and Peace & Quiet
In our new home, we won’t be sharing walls, ceilings, or floors with anyone else. No more enduring the relentless thumping bass that vibrated our suite and everything in it at all hours, no more choking on cigarette smoke seeping into our home, no more hearing chilling night terror screams from across the hall, and no more dealing with management companies, landlords, or the drama of resident message boards.

Safety and Comfort
We will have peace of mind, free from the horrors of past experiences, like crime scenes, murders, fire alarm and elevator malfunctions, pest problems, a leaking roof, and laundry facility shortages.

As we embark on this new chapter in our lives, I am filled with a sense of eager anticipation and gratitude. The memories of our previous living situations, with their unique challenges and quirks, have paved the way for this exciting transition. We can’t wait to embrace the joys of homeownership and all the adventures that await.

Thanks for reading! Until next time,
Tracey
