Backyard Birding | January, February, March 2024

Over the past three months, my birdwatching adventures have been more sporadic than I had initially anticipated, largely due to the joyful chaos that comes with welcoming a new dog into our home. Nonetheless, amidst the hustle and bustle, I managed to capture some remarkable moments, particularly when a flock of Bohemian Waxwings graced our trees with their presence on multiple occasions.

Another one of the memorable birdwatching (or bird hearing) experiences that I have had recently occurred on a quiet evening. As I was laying on the sofa in our living room that faces our backyard, I thought I heard an owl hooting in the distance. Given that I knew one has frequented our area, it didn’t seem entirely far-fetched. Excited by the possibility, I gently nudged my husband awake knowing he’d share my enthusiasm. We quietly opened the window and I quickly launched the Merlin Bird ID app on my phone. To our delight, the distinctive call sounded again, unmistakably that of a Great Horned Owl. I don’t think it was in our backyard, but it was still a magical moment, confirming our suspicions and adding a thrilling chapter to our backyard birdwatching adventures.

Here is a list of birds I saw (or heard) in the months of January, February, and March.

  • American Crow
  • Black-billed Magpie
  • Black-capped Chickadee
  • Blue Jay
  • Bohemian waxwing
  • Canada Goose (Flew Over)
  • Dark-eyed Junco
  • Downy Woodpecker
  • Great Horned Owl (Heard)
  • House Finch
  • House Sparrow
  • Merlin (Heard)
  • Red-breasted Nuthatch

Now that we are settling into a routine with our pup, I am hoping that I will have more frequent (monthly) birding recaps going forward.

Thanks for reading! Until next time,
