Into the Wild – Weekly Musings on our Yard’s Transformation | August 25th – 31st

Yardwork:

  • We made really good progress sifting more soil for the raised planter boxes, but we had to contend with relentless wasps and mosquitos. Unfortunately, the trap and the faux nests haven’t been as effective as we’d hoped.
  • We placed the raised planter boxes along the side of the house, filled them with soil, then added gravel to cover the ground. There is a cement slab next to the gate that I wanted to cover with gravel, but since we will need to fix the gate sooner than later, I’ll leave it for now. I’m not loving how this looks, but it is a practical way to use up extra materials that we had.

Gardening:

  • We harvested a huge haul of beans from the garden, and they were absolutely delicious! We also picked our first cucumber, and it was massive!
  • Harvested some rhubarb and made a rhubarb crisp.

Fauna:

  • A new lifer spotted! A Wilson’s Warbler. Such a cute little bird.
  • The neighbourhood House Sparrow population appears to have grown again and it looks like there is closer to 40 sparrows now. We might need to get that trap sooner than later.
  • I’ve heard it a few times before, but I finally saw the Swainson’s Hawk soaring overheard.

Miscellaneous:

  • Built three raised planter boxes for the south side yard. I messed up a bit on the first one, but no big deal.
  • Discovered that our front porch light has outlets! This is so amazing (as we couldn’t find any outdoor outlets aside from the ones in the back of our house – which one doesn’t even work). Maybe we can finally hang Christmas lights this year. Unfortunately, we can’t use both outlets as the door frame blocks the cover from fully opening.
  • Grass and weeds are growing through the rocks around the firepit (I probably should have dug those out first) Trying a salt and water mix to kill anything under the rocks – fingers crossed that it works!
  • The wood tiles for the hammock platform have arrived! We used these ones about 10 years ago for a patio space under the trees in our front yard at our old duplex and they have been in storage with the parents ever since.
  • My Dad brought us a weed eater, this will help so much to trim all the edges around rocks so much easier.
  • Picked some mountain ash berries to craft a garland
