Into the Wild – Weekly Musings on our Yard’s Transformation | August 11th – 17th

Yardwork:

  • After some struggles with leveling the slate stones, a trip to Home Depot and a few bags of sand later – I finally finished the firepit area, including seeding with a mix of grass and clover. (Aside from the seed, I thought this was supposed to be a repurposed materials only project)
  • I completed most of the stepping stones leading to the back gate. I still need to remove our dirt pile to place the remaining stones and add some fresh soil for seeding.
  • We had a lot of brick left, so I decided to use it for our garden paths. We had just the right amount. Next, I need to dig them in and seed clover to soften the edges.

Gardening:

  • The squash plant, which we’re amazed is still thriving, is now producing squash!
  • Some of our beans will be ready to pick in a couple of days.

Flora:

Love the Johnny-Jump-Ups popping up in the clover.

Fauna:

  • A family of Robins were visiting our yard feeding on some worms and bugs. While I was taking some photos of them, a hummingbird popped into our yard! Needless to say, I put the hummingbird feeder back up!
  • The hummingbird came back the next night, and the day after. I was able to get a photo of her while she was at the Scarlet Runner bean obelisk.
  • Spotted a spider on the patio and took some macro shots with my iPhone macro lens. I’d prefer to use a lens for my digital camera, but that’s still on my wish list.

Miscellaneous:

  • Made a simple DIY herb hanger using twine and an embroidery hoop.
  • We’ve had a lot of rain recently, but I’m thrilled to see that there’s no standing water in my landscaping!

Thanks for reading! Until next time,
Tracey
